Make sure
that history doesn't repeat, Mr. Sharif!
Just as Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif, the
apparent winner of the historic election was busy in talks to form a new
government, the congratulatory messages he received from the Indian Prime
Minister and the US President are obviously
significant. The way both the leaders extended their readiness to work "as
equal partners" with the new government of Pakistan indicates that the United States and India are ready to work closely with
a democratically elected government in Pakistan. Moreover, for India, this would be an
opportune time to recuperating or improve its relations with its (foe) neighbor.
(I apologize for using the word (foe). Look at the way how Indian Prime
Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh addressed the congratulatory message to Sharif:
"Dear Mian Saheb, I am writing to extend to
you my heartiest congratulations on your emphatic victory in the general
elections in Pakistan."
Though former Prime Minister Sharif's comeback is
stunning, I think I too should not hesitate to congratulate him for his comeback.
Please accept my congratulations, Mr. Sharif! However, with a heavy heart,
recalling to the 1999 coup, I would like to caution Mr. Sharif: "Please
make sure that the history doesn't repeat."
